چکیده

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks make use of closed-loop rate-based feedback control in the ABR (Available Bit Rate) service in order to avoid network congestion. ABR mechanisms enable network designers to position node buffering requirements within their networks. End-user applications, such as Internet applications, benefit from the control action of ABR. ABR control attempts to maintain a steady network state in which node buffer occupancy and corresponding node transit delays are both low. However, a myriad of techniques exists for implementing an ABR-capable ATM switch. This makes the task of deploying ABR, in order to achieve a given set of network performance objectives, very complex. This paper describes further development of a technique to evaluate the interoperability performance of ABR-capable ATM switches. Firstly, the current and future prospects for ABR as a relevant network service are presented. Alterations to a performance evaluation suite design are given and results in the literature discussed. Finally, conclusions are drawn concerning the viability of creating networks with a mixture of ABR switches with differing capabilities.

Interoperability of EFCI and ERICA ATM switches for ABR services with VS/VD enhancements

To improve network bandwidth utilization, the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) forum has standardized available bit rate (ABR) service which requires a number of parameters to be negotiated during connection setup. MCR is the minimum cell rate guaranteed by the network and can be used to provide an acceptable quality of service for applications. In this study, explicit forward congestion indica...

Evaluation of the ER Algorithm ERAQLES in Different ABR Environments

ABR was standardised by the ATM Forum in 1996 . Source, destination and switch behaviours were specified. However, a lot of freedom was left to the switch manufacturers to implement an efficient algorithm compliant with the ABR specifications. There exists three different behaviours. Namely, they are binary switches, Relative Rate (RR) switches and Explicit Rate (ER) switches. In this paper, a ...

Interoperability of EFCI and ER switches for ABR services in ATM networks

With the advances in switching technologies, ER switches are becoming popular since they perform better than EFCI switches. In the transitional period, the EFCI and ER switches may coexist in the same ATM network. Hence the efficiency of various ER schemes should be considered in the mixed EFCI-ER environment, not only in the homogeneous ER environment. In this paper, we describe five ER contro...

Design and simulation of ATM-ABR end system congestion control

We develop a simulation model for the ATM ABR service, and use it to engineer ABR congestion control behavior. Although significant work has been performed on ABR rate allocation algorithms at network switches, little work has focused on the end system behavior, which we examine in this paper. The effect of the speed of links on the path from the source to the destination, and the connection ro...

Dynamics of an Explicit Rate Allocation Algorithm for Atm Networks

In this paper we study the performance of an explicit rate allocation algorithm for ATM networks using the available bit-rate (ABR) class of service. We examine the behavior of ABR traac with simple cell sources, and demonstrate that the allocation algorithm is fair and maintains network eeciency in a variety of network conngurations. We also study the behavior of TCP/IP sources using ABR servi...
